MONSTER HUNTERS
written by David K. Barnes
"What big feet you have, my dear..."
Sylvia Strike, the infamous monster hunter, has spent her whole life searching for Bigfoot, and has been all over the world. Now, on her 65th birthday, she may be about to meet him face to face – outside her cottage in the middle of Kent. Of course, her son is an academic and says it’s all rubbish, whilst her daughter doesn’t know what to believe. But something is happening in the woods outside,
and Sylvia is determined to find out what it is…

Monster Hunters was written for my MA at Goldsmiths, under the tutelage of John Ginman, David Lane and Fin Kennedy. Prompted by the initiative to research something of which I had a vague interest but no actual knowledge, I decided to tackle the subject of cryptozoology - the psuedoscience devoted to discovering animals whose existence has not yet been proven - and more specifically the kinds of people who subscribe to its beliefs. Whilst I had intended to write a farcical light comedy about a pair of squabbling academics (think Frasier with Bigfoot), upon researching the topic and meeting avowed cryptozoologists I decided to take a more dramatic take on the subject. I began to wonder how a person would feel if their family members believed strongly - and indeed publicly - in things that the person, and much of society, deemed utterly ludicrous. What would be the psychological impact of that? And why do a great many number of people believe in the seemingly impossible?
Whilst I remain dubious as to the existence of the Loch Ness Monster and the Abominable Snowman, I would love to see this play receive a full production some day - particularly as it features a tremendous central role for an older female actor.
